When I was growing up (back in the day), there were very few options in children’s television programming. You simply watched Sesame Street, Public Broadcasting Service‘s long-running children’s show
I must have adored Sesame Street the same way my son worships Yo Gabba Gabba and Olivia because I named the goldfish I won at a local fair Ernie and Bert. Not long after we brought them home, Bert met his timely demise (as most fair fish do) and was flushed down the toilet. But Ernie defied all the odds and kept growing and growing. I remember his tail was so long and beautiful and he kept outgrowing his tanks. My mom said I was more hysterical when Ernie died than when my Great Uncle Bob passed away.
My son hasn’t gotten into Sesame Street and even if he ever does, Elmo gets most of the glory these days. But I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to acknowledge Ernie’s birthday on January 28th. I only wish Ernie could fill me in on his beauty secret because he has yet to start showing his age.
Bert and rubber ducky better have some fantastic plans in place to celebrate Ernie’s big birthday. Even if they stay in their basement apartment at 123 Sesame Street.
Happy Birthday, Ernie! Make it filled with your distinctive, chuckling laugh.
