Big Birthday Wishes, Big Bird!

Not only is today the first day of Spring, but every year on March 20th, Big Bird celebrates being 6½ years old. (Wouldn’t it be nice of we didn’t age on our birthday!)

Big Bird is an 8-foot, 2-inch yellow bird who lives on Sesame Street. Since Sesame Street premiered in 1969, Big Bird has entertained millions of pre-school children and their parents with his wide-eyed wondering at the world. He can roller skate, ice skate, dance, sing, write poetry, draw and even ride a unicycle. But despite this wide array of talents, he is prone to frequent misunderstandings, on one occasion even singing the alphabet as one big long word (from the song called “ABC-DEF-GHI,” pronounced “ab-keddef-gajihkel-monop-quristuv-wixyz”), pondering what it could ever mean.

Big Bird is able to make friends easily and helps children feel all right about not knowing everything because he himself does not know everything, and encourages them to inquire: a common Big Bird phrase in recent years has been “Asking questions is a good way of finding things out!” He also teaches other life, alphabet, and numerical lessons: “I guess it’s better to be who you are. Turns out people like you best that way, anyway.”

Big Bird is one of two Muppets to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Do you know who the other Muppet is?

I am dedicating this post to my sweet niece who has cherished Big Bird since she was very young. Both my niece and Big Bird light up the room and can be described as being lovable, innocent, and curious.

Big birthday wishes, Big Bird! Happy Spring, everyone! There’s definitely a SPRING in my step due to this gorgeous weather!
